C 00- Overview of Construction of Underground Water Reservoir for Rainwater Harvesting System

Figure: The site

Introduction

Water scarcity is a growing concern worldwide, and sustainable solutions are essential to address this issue. One such solution is the construction of rainwater harvesting systems, which collect and store rainwater for various uses. In Bangladesh, the Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP) has initiated an innovative project to construct a rainwater harvesting system with an underground water reservoir. This project, located at CRP in Kadamtali,Savar, aims to ensure a reliable water supply while promoting sustainability.

Project Overview

Client: Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP),Bangladesh

CRP, Bangladesh, a renowned organization dedicated to providing support and rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities, has undertaken this project as part of their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative. The rainwater harvesting system is designed to cater to the water needs of the CRP facilities while contributing to environmental conservation.

Project Components

  • Rainwater Harvesting System:
The primary component of this project is the rainwater harvesting system, which will capture rainwater from rooftops and other surfaces.
The collected rainwater will be directed into an underground reservoir, ensuring efficient storage and minimal evaporation loss.

  • Underground Water Reservoir:
The underground water reservoir is the heart of the system, designed to store a substantial amount of harvested rainwater.

Dimensions: 30 feet in length 7 feet in height and 12 feet in width, providing 10000 capacity to meet the water demands of CRP's facilities.
  • Filter Tank:
A filter tank with dimensions of 7 feet by 7 feet will be attached to the reservoir.
This tank will serve as a primary filtration unit, ensuring that the collected rainwater is free from debris and impurities before it enters the reservoir.
  • Room:
Above the water reservoir, a 10 feet by 12 feet room will be constructed. Its height will be 9 feet and tin will be used as roof. This room will use for control systems to manage the flow of water from the reservoir to the CRP facilities.
Benefits of the Project

Sustainable Water Supply

The rainwater harvesting system will provide a reliable and sustainable water source, reducing dependency on external water supplies.
This is particularly crucial during dry seasons when water scarcity can be a significant challenge.

Environmental Conservation

By utilizing rainwater, the project will contribute to groundwater recharge, helping to maintain the natural water cycle.
It will also reduce the strain on local water resources, promoting environmental sustainability.

Cost Savings

Over time, the rainwater harvesting system will lead to substantial cost savings by reducing the need for purchased water.
The initial investment in infrastructure will be offset by the long-term benefits of a self-sustaining water supply.

Community Impact

CRP's commitment to sustainable practices will serve as a model for other organizations and communities in Bangladesh. The project will raise awareness about the importance of rainwater harvesting and inspire similar initiatives in the region.

Conclusion

The Construction of the Rainwater Harvesting System with an Underground Water Reservoir at CRP, Savar, is a forward-thinking project that exemplifies the principles of sustainability and resource management. By harnessing the power of nature, CRP is not only addressing its water needs but also contributing to the broader goal of environmental conservation. This project stands as a testament to the innovative solutions that can be implemented to overcome water scarcity and promote a sustainable future.
