Every structural engineering project presents a different challenge, and every challenge provides an opportunity to learn, improve, and become a better engineer. My journey at Pioneer Design & Development Ltd. (PDDL) has been an important part of my professional development, providing me with opportunities to work on existing structures, proposed structural systems, technical assessments, code-based design, and real-world project coordination.

I joined Pioneer Design & Development Ltd. on 9 January 2026 as a Structural Designer. From the beginning, I was allowed to work on practical structural engineering assignments involving both existing and proposed structures. In May 2026, I was promoted to Sr. Structural Design Engineer, which I consider an important milestone in my career.

Working with Existing Structures

One of the significant areas of my professional experience at PDDL has been working with existing buildings based on as-built drawings and available structural information.

Working with existing structures requires a different approach from designing a new building. The engineer must understand the existing structural configuration, interpret available drawings and information, consider actual site conditions, identify potential structural deficiencies, and evaluate the structure based on applicable design and assessment requirements.

Through these projects, I have gained practical experience in understanding how structural systems behave beyond theoretical calculations and how engineering decisions must account for actual site and structural conditions.

Designing Proposed Structures

Alongside existing-building assessment, I have also been involved in the analysis and design of proposed structures in accordance with applicable code provisions and project requirements.

My work involves understanding the structural system, establishing appropriate design criteria and loading conditions, performing structural analysis, designing structural members, and ensuring that the resulting design satisfies relevant safety and serviceability requirements.

This experience has strengthened my understanding of the connection between structural analysis, engineering judgment, code provisions, and constructability.

Application of Structural Codes and Guidelines

A major part of my work has been the practical application and interpretation of structural design standards and guidelines.

Depending on the project requirements, my work has involved provisions from:

  • BNBC 2006
  • BNBC 2020
  • NTPA Guidelines
  • ASCE 7-05
  • ACI 311–319

Working with different codes and guidelines has helped me develop a stronger understanding of how structural engineering principles are translated into practical design requirements. It has also reinforced the importance of not simply performing calculations, but understanding the intent and applicability of the relevant provisions.

Technical Meetings and Professional Coordination

Structural engineering is not an isolated discipline. Effective communication and coordination among engineers, clients, consultants, authorities, and other stakeholders are essential for successful project delivery.

During my time at PDDL, I participated in technical meetings with RSC and Primark representatives, where we discussed project-specific structural issues, design considerations, code requirements, assessment findings, and proposed engineering solutions.

These experiences have helped me develop not only my technical knowledge but also my ability to communicate engineering decisions clearly and professionally with different stakeholders.

Learning Through Project Visits

Another valuable aspect of my experience has been participating in project and site visits on behalf of PDDL.

Site exposure has allowed me to better understand the relationship between structural drawings and actual construction conditions. It has also helped me recognize the practical challenges that structural engineers encounter in the field—challenges that cannot always be fully understood through drawings, models, or calculations alone.

For a structural engineer, I believe that this connection between design office experience and field experience is extremely important.

More Than Design and Calculations

My experience at PDDL has reinforced an important principle: structural engineering is much more than designing beams, columns, slabs, and foundations.

A structural engineer must be able to:

Understand → Analyze → Design → Assess → Communicate → Coordinate → Take Responsibility.

Every project requires engineering judgment. Every code provision must be properly interpreted. Every structural decision ultimately contributes to the safety, serviceability, and performance of the built environment.

This perspective has significantly influenced the way I approach my professional responsibilities.

Looking Ahead

My journey at Pioneer Design & Development Ltd. is still in its early stages, but the experience I have gained so far has provided a strong foundation for my continued development as a structural engineer.

I am particularly interested in expanding my expertise in structural analysis, structural assessment, seismic design, retrofit engineering, and performance-based structural design.

I am grateful for the opportunities, responsibilities, guidance, and professional exposure I have received at PDDL. The transition from Structural Designer to Sr. Structural Design Engineer within a few months has been both an achievement and a reminder of the responsibility that comes with professional growth.

I look forward to continuing to learn, take on more challenging projects, and contribute to creating safer, more resilient, and better-performing structures.
